My name is Emma and I am the Edible Garden Project’s summer intern! I just graduated from Carson Graham Secondary and in the fall, I will be attending SFU to study environmental resource management and sustainability. I am excited to be getting to work with the EGP this summer as I want to gain more knowledge on growing food especially in urban areas and the ways that the EGP does this.
This past week and a half I have gotten to visit four of the nine sharing gardens, help harvest at Loutet and Sutherland, pick (and taste test) lots and lots of peas, ride the electric bike, hill potatoes, weed, mulch kale (to prevent weeds from growing but also to help hold moisture in the soil), flip compost, and help at the Food Hub and Farm Gate Sales. It has poured with rain and been really warm but each day has been a blast and I have learned a lot already. I have gotten to meet a bunch of the amazing volunteers at sharing gardens and all the EGP staff.
I am looking forward to the rest of the summer working with everyone where I will get the opportunity to learn about how the different programs run and spend lots of time in the garden!
Until next time!
