An introductory workshop on traditional Chinese herbal medicine and medicinal plant cultivation led by Chris Spangenberg that presents the traditional Chinese medicine learning and demonstration garden beds at Loutet Farm. This workshop will introduce and discuss Chinese herbal medicine in the context of their traditional practice, cultivation and conservation, with activities that will engage and educate participants on the health and cultural benefits of medicinal plants.
Chris Spangenberg is a gardener and medicinal herb-grower of German-Chinese heritage with a particular interest in medicinal plants from Asia. He is a recent graduate from the Global Resource Systems program at the University of British Columbia, where he studied ethnobotany and the cultivation of Asian medicinal plants. An initial interest in the philosophy and herbs behind traditional Chinese medicine treatments that he received after high school led him to a passion for working with medicinal plants, and eventually, to switch his study and vocation to working with plants and fellow people who grow and use them. He is currently growing traditional Chinese medicinal plants at two community garden and farm sites in Vancouver to promote Asian herbal medicine and medicinal plant cultivation.
