As the school year came to a close, the Edible Garden Project wrapped up their school programs in June in the six North Shore elementary schools we worked with this past year. Over the past school year, we worked with Queen Mary, Cleveland, Brooksbank, Highlands, Holy Trinity, and Carisbrooke elementary schools to deliver garden education and help maintain their school gardens. We were amazed to see all the student’s hard work come to fruition in the form of delicious plants and vegetables! As an end of year bash, we held a “Salad Celebration” at each school, where the students were able to harvest the vegetables they grew and make it into a personalized salad with honey and lemon salad dressing that they made! Some popular vegetables that were harvested were Kohlrabi, Swiss Chard, Lettuce and various types of Kale. It was amazing for the students to indulge in the products of all their hard work this year.
In addition to the school programs, we have also filled up the Seed Field in the back of our farm with various flowers and vegetables. We were given a grant by RBC to implement the Seed Field at the back of our farm in order to serve various purposes. The main focus of this Seed Field is to grow regionally adapted seed in order to strengthen our capacity to respond to the impacts of climate change. This project is also used as a way of providing hands-on seed-saving education to both children in Grades K-12, and to the community. Workshops are also offered throughout the year to empower the community to grow regionally adapted seed.
Our weekly markets have also been a blast! Every market we seem to put out more and more varieties of produce. New to the market are Garlic, Zucchini, and Potatoes! Our markets are Wednesday’s from 2-4pm and Saturday’s from 10am-2pm. Stop by–we would love to see you!
