Have you ever wondered where the “seed to plate” movement really starts?
For most of us, the art of seed saving is a total mystery! But this skill that was once common practice is actually the key to locally sustainable food systems. In our Intro to Seed Saving workshop, David Catzel from Farm Folk City Folk will discuss how to decide which types of seed to save, how to adapt varieties for our climate and how seed saving contributes to ecological resilience. There will also be hands-on demonstrations of seed harvesting and cleaning. For new gardeners and full-fledged urban farmers alike, this workshop will be participant driven, so bring your seed-related questions!
About the instructor:
David started his farming career in Vancouver running gardening programs for youth out of Cottonwood and Strathcona Community gardens. He has had the opportunity to experiment with seed growing/breeding, low till annual production, intercropping and companion planting while working with Glorious Organics Co-op in Aldergrove, BC. He has taught workshops in gardening, composting, permaculture, and seed saving to adults and children all over the lower mainland.
David is currently the director of the BC Seeds Program run by Farm Folk CityFolk. The program works on building and increasing capacity for BC farmers to produce organic vegetable seed which in turn will lead to a more sustainable food system.
