Building Urban Garden Blitz – BUG Blitz

Last summer an enthusiastic group of 20 or so people came together – many of them had never met before – to transform one person’s backyard into a food producing oasis. We built raised beds, a bee foraging habitat, assembled bee hives, and more.  This was the first of what we’re calling “Building Urban Garden Blitzes” or BUG Blitzes.

Lead by a dedicated volunteer, Evonne, and supported by the Table Matters Working Group – interest in participating in BUG Blitzes has exploded this year. Through the Spring and Summer there will be approximately one per month – or more if we can find enthusiastic volunteers to help organize.   Click here to find out more about what a BUG Blitz is all about.

The first BUG Blitz of the year will be held on Saturday March 24th, 10am-4pm at École André Piolat (Mahon Ave and Kings Rd). We will be installing two garden areas at this school – one for the younger students and one for the older. You’ll learn to build raised cedar beds and terraced beds, and help us move a lot of soil to make a garden that these students will be excited and engaged by.

You do not need any experience or tools, but if you have either we would love you to bring them along (shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, cordless drills, level, measuring tape, and hand spades)! Feel free to bring a friend or neighbour too!

Please let us know that you are coming (so we have enough tools!) – email Evonne at: gardenblitz@gmail.com
